marijuana leafWith only a few days left of 2021, the Legislature, Department of Revenue, and entire marijuana industry has spent the last year gearing up for January 1, 2022, when certain medical marijuana dispensaries will begin to sell adult-use marijuana products. Several resources are available for citizens, consumers, and businesses, to help navigate the new marijuana laws and rules in Montana.

  • The Cannabis Control Division within the Department of Revenue has useful information on its website for both the medical and adult-use programs, including current licensee lists, cardholder and other medical program information, links to administrative rules, and an FAQ page.
  • Montana Free Press [montanafreepress.org] recently published an article, Montana marijuana FAQ [montanafreepress.org] by Max Savage Levenson, with answers to many common questions for consumers, from where and when adult-use marijuana will be available, to public consumption rules, taxes, and laws about driving with marijuana.
  • The Economic Affairs Interim Committee has been studying the implementation of House Bill 701, the enacting legislation for the adult-use program. The committee plans to review program successes and pain points at its next meeting in early February 2022, will tour and visit with several marijuana licensees in the spring, and continually seeks feedback from the public and industry regarding ideas for improvement.

The committee website also includes information on future meeting dates and opportunities for public participation in the study.
